TAG Presents chosen by the San Diego 250 Committee to help develop the SD250 Celebration Events

TAG Presents was chosen by the San Diego 250 Committee to lead the coordination of events throughout the 2019 year to celebrate the 250th year of the founding of San Diego, California’s first city.  The celebration will kick off in April with a Port of San Diego event, and culminate with a San Diego 250 community stage and other free local activations at the Wonderfront Festival in November.

Tuesday, March 12, 2019 – NEWS RELEASE

San Diego – Standing alongside a broad coalition of civic leaders, organizations, community volunteers and Kumeyaay representatives, Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer today introduced collaborative efforts to commemorate the City’s 250th anniversary and where California began.

The San Diego 250 initiative is a community-driven effort to create historical and educational opportunities to reflect on the city’s history and leave behind a legacy for the future. The group has met biweekly to plan key events and identify other ways to educate San Diegans on the significance of this moment in time.

“This year we mark a tremendous milestone – 250 years of history, culture and achievement,” Mayor Faulconer said. “San Diego is the place where California began, and we will reflect on our past, commemorate this moment in time and look forward to building a better future for all San Diegans in the next 250 years. I want to thank the many dedicated individuals and organizations that have come together to help celebrate this important anniversary and create opportunities to learn more about our history and heritage as a city and region.”

San Diego today is the eighth largest city in the nation known for its beautiful beaches, active lifestyle and diverse, vibrant communities. The area has been Kumeyaay territory for thousands of years and they continue to be part of the region’s cultural fabric. Kumeyaay representatives have had the opportunity to be a part of meaningful discussions within the working group to aid in the accurate historical representation of their history. This year could be a starting point for a larger Kumeyaay presence in the city moving forward.

The San Diego we know today began on July 16, 1769, and this year the city and regional partners look to commemorate this significant anniversary through three events slated to take place during 2019. The events are free and open to the public:

  • April 11, 2019 – Port of San Diego and Maritime Museum will co-host an event inspired by the arrival of the Spanish sailing ship, San Antonio, into San Diego Bay 250 years ago to the day. The event brings together the Kumeyaay Nation, public officials, the Maritime Museum and honored guests to share in marking the day that San Diego began.
  • July 16, 2019 – Honored guests and officials will gather atop Presidio Park to honor our past and envision our future during a civic ceremony to commemorate our shared history. The event will feature a press conference, dedication of Kumeyaay flag, VIP tour of new exhibits, entertainment and refreshments.
  • September 14 & 15, 2019 – Rich in heritage and bursting with opportunities to explore, Old Town is not only historically significant but provides the perfect location for guests to fully immerse themselves in San Diego’s history and celebrate the future. The weekend-long Founders’ Day Festival will feature entertainment, vendors and activities for the whole family.
  • November 22-24, 2019 – The inaugural Wonderfront Festival will debut with more than 10 stages and over 100 performing bands all along the downtown San Diego waterfront on Port of San Diego parks and piers properties. Bands, comedians, visual arts, yacht parties, water taxis, and lots of games and activities will be spread across two miles of the Ocean’s waterfront in the heart of downtown San Diego. As part of the festival a San Diego 250 stage will offer three days of free entertainment, a second free stage featuring salsa artists, along with other free community activations including the Swoosh aerial exhibitions.

WONDERFRONT Music & Arts Festival Releases Highly-Anticipated Phase 1 Lineup

Monday, June 3, 2019 – San Diego, CA – Following months of excitement and mystery

since the announcement of the inaugural WONDERFRONT Music & Arts Festival, the

highly anticipated lineup has been released to the public. A Phase 2 unveiling of

additional artists will take place later this summer to round out the exciting lineup.

Gracing the 7+ stages, which will be spread out across the downtown waterfront, will be

artists including Miguel, Slightly Stoopid, Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals, MGMT,

Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Nicky Jam, Don Omar, Vince Staples, Tyga, Los Angeles

Azules, Tucanes de Tijuana, Walk the Moon, Phantogram, X Ambassadors, Michael

Franti & Spearhead, Lil Dicky, Big Gigantic, Pennywise, and many more. Later this

summer a couple big surprises will be announced to join the many great artists across

the myriad of genres.

Wonderfront co-founder Paul Thornton states; “Our goal with this lineup was to have it

stacked from start to finish each day with great artists. It’s hard to really call any certain

bands our so-called headliners as so many lines of bands on this festival are all

headliners in their own right. We’ve had a tough time choosing between so many

talented artists across the many genres into the finite number of stage slots available.

We also wanted a great mix of artists across the time slots, so that not all the bigger

names were just playing at the same later times. We really appreciate the artists that

have worked with us to make that possible.”

A core mission of the Wonderfront Festival is to showcase the hottest emerging artists,

beloved stars, and some local favorites. The preliminary lineup achieves these goals

with over 80 artists descending upon San Diego’s waterfront in late November, creating

an exceptional three-day experience at one of the world’s most vibrant festival

destinations.

A true San Diego festival wouldn’t be complete without some Punk Rock thrown into the

mix. With the inclusion of the Tony Hawk’s Huckjam Stage Wonderfront will present

Pennywise, Suicidal Tendencies, X, Vandals, and DJ Z-Trip. These are some of the

most quintessential bands to be performing next to Tony Hawk’s HuckJam Ramp where

Tony and some of the best pro skaters in the world will be performing their amazing

tricks.

“I’m excited to bring back the Huckjam format (choreographed and freestyle skating with

live music) after 10 years of hiatus, and there is no better place for it than my

hometown. I’m proud to be involved with Wonderfront, and it’s been a blast helping

handpick the legendary punk bands for our stage.” Tony Hawk, Wonderfront Festival

Partner.

Rob Machado and Trevor Hoffman, who, like Tony Hawk, became involved in the

festival early on as investors and ambassadors are thrilled with the caliber of the lineup

and the mindful approach that was taken to get it to where it is today.

“It’s exciting to be part of the Wonderfront Festival. I played Street Scene back in the

day and I thought it was so cool to have a festival in downtown SD. And now it’s

back!! Such an amazing group of people have come together to make this happen and

it’s going to be epic. Honored to be included with Trevor and Tony as an ambassador.

Stoked to have the Rob Machado foundation as a partner providing free refill stations

for all festival guests. It’s going to be a really good time. Can’t wait.” Rob Machado,

Wonderfront Festival Partner.

“I’m excited to see San Diego close out the festival season in style with Wonderfront.

Ernie and Paul are a perfect duo for this world class event in a world class city.” Trevor

Hoffman, Wonderfront Festival Partner.

Festival co-founder Ernie Hahn adds; “This event is for San Diego, by San Diego, and

takes the best of the Wonderfront and the Gaslamp at a time of year San Diego needs a

big event to bring us all together. All of San Diego and the greater Baja area are

represented with the genres of music, food, art and experience Wonderfront will bring to

the world November 22-24, 2019. We are really stoked for San Diego and will be

working with everyone to make this incredible!”

The Wonderfront Festival is a true collaboration at its finest by many of San Diego’s

staples in the local music scene. The Belly Up, Music Box, Casbah and RMD Club

Group have all collaborated on the curation of artists to make Wonderfront a truly homegrown

festival.

“The Belly Up has been an integral part of the San Diego music scene since the 1970’s

and it makes total sense to be involved with what is truly San Diego’s Music

festival. The lineup reflects the cultural mix of who we are and what we like to see and

hear and eat and drink. Ernie and Paul have ambitiously come up with a concept and a

location that is world class and should be supported by everyone who loves music and

San Diego! We’re proud to be part of the Wonderfront Festival for now and years to

come.” Steve Goldberg, Phil Berkovitz and Chris Goldsmith; Belly Up Entertainment

WONDERFRONT Music and Arts Festival

A Successful 2019 Wonderfront Festival Recap

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 27

Wonderfront Music and Arts Festival delivered an incredible 3-day weekend filled with music, art, and unforgetable memories. This ambitious first-year festival took over downtown San Diego like no other music festival has done before with more than 10 stages, 128 bands and 29 DJ’s, across 5 parks stretched along the bay. The weekend’s attendance surpassed 56,000 in its inaugural year. It’s breathtaking location between the bay and San Diego’s ever-growing downtown skyline, Wonderfront was truly a postcard setting.

Each evening closed with electrifying headlining sets across multiple main stages including Miguel, Ben Harper, Nicky Jam, MGMT, Migos, Slightly Stoopid, Don Omar, Tyga, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Los Angeles Azules, and X Ambassadors. Each performance captivated crowds and garnered rave fanfare;

“Thank you for filling my soul with the amazing music this team put together. I may have pulled every muscle from my hips to my ankles, but it was totally worth it.” – Julie Moritz

While music was thoughtfully woven into each aspect of the festival, it was only part of the fun. Patrons could hop aboard Flagship yachts and water taxis for a stunning view of the bay, SWOOP took over the sky with an aerial skydiving show, punk rock bands and pro-skaters (including Tony Hawk himself) took over at Tony Hawk’s Huckjam venue, incredible activations let fans lounge in style like in Uncle Ed’s D*mn Good Village or the Hazy Little Thing Lounge, plus local food and drinks flowed throughout each venue including LionFish, NaPizza, Sambazon, Wicked Maine Lobster, Chanchos Tacos, some of San Diego’s favorite local craft beers, and so much more.

“San Diego was absolutely beautiful this weekend, great layout, better than expected music performances, the detail and fun interaction with the vendors was so fun! That bridge from Uncle Ed’s Stage to the KUSI stage was brilliant. The Water Taxi’s were so convenient and that Marietta Boat with the bands (we forgot to get off, we were having too much fun).” – Donna Rose

“Best music festival ever!” – Lisa Lewis

“This was by far the best festival SD has produced in a while. Fantastic location, great layout.” – Chris Maris

“Luv Luv Loved it! You totally sold me!! And for being the first time ever, What??!! The venue was smooth sailing (unusual for a first time).” – Michelle Drosis

The first year festival earned high praises from many artists, as the social posts started flowing; “Thank you @Wonderfrontfest for having us. Amazing vibe for a first year festival.” – Bob Moses

“Last full set of 2019 was magical with San Diego and @Wonderfrontfest.” – Walk The Moon

“Our last live show of 2019 on Saturday in San Diego was the best possible way to finish a crazy year.” – The Knocks “It was such an honor and fun experience to be a part of the first Wonderfront Festival. I loved being able to share the stage with some legendary artists and to see so much Latin talent in the lineup! I know this will be the first of many!” – Victoria La Mala

Wonderfront Music and Arts Festival was truly a music lover’s festival and made San Diegans fall in love with their city all over again. With endless opportunities and experiences, there was something for everyone to enjoy, regardless of age or music taste. Wonderfront Festival is looking forward to blowing everyone’s minds in 2020 on what a festival can further evolve into becoming, with many more surprises up our sleeves.
